What is it?

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR or Industry 4.0) is the ongoing automation of traditional manufacturing and industrial practices, using modern smart technology. Large-scale machine-to-machine communication (M2M) and the internet of things (IoT) are integrated for increased automation, improved communication and self-monitoring, and production of smart machines that can analyze and diagnose issues without the need for human intervention.

What are the key technologies related to Industry 4.0?

While technology continues to change rapidly, the 9 major pillars of Industry 4.0 are as follows,

  1. Cybersecurity

  2. Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR)

  3. Big Data and Analytics

  4. Advanced Robotics and Automation

  5. Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing)

  6. System Integration

  7. Advanced Simulation

  8. Cloud Computing

  9. Internet of Things

For a detailed definition of each of the 9 Pillars mentioned above, see our Glossary.

Why is this Important?

These changes will begin to reshape the business, economic and workforce landscapes over the next 10-15 years.
